This was a Catholic church built on an Incan ruin called The Temple of the Sun. It wasn't a ruin until the Spanish arrived. They systematically destroyed all the Incan religious sites and purposely built their churches on the ruins. The original Incan wall is clearly visible here. Outside this wall (in the Incan times) was a huge garden covering several blocks. It had flowers, bugs, trees, butterflies, and animals. Everything you would expect in a garden except it was all made of gold in exquisite detail. Of course the Spanish destroyed nearly all of it and melted it down to satisfy their greed. The Incans did not view gold as something of value by itself, only as a beautiful material to create with.
