We went in to the catacombs of the church where the common people were buried for hundreds of years. They would place the bodies stacked on top of each other in open rectangular pits (with a little lime to keep the smell down.. I can't imagine that it worked that well!). After a few years they would remove the bones and dump them in a big pit like this one to make room for more bodies. These bones were arranged by the archeologists for display.
